On March 10, 2025, the IDSA organized a Ecosystem Building Call with Angela Mitrovska (Research Associate of the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI)) as a speaker on Federated Learning Governance using Eclips Dataspace Components Connectors. The Fraunhofer HHI is a leading research institute for mobile and fixed communications networks and for key applications in the world.

Federated Learning is a privacy-preserving method for training machine learning models on sensitive data. However, its practical adoption is hindered by complex privacy regulations and the lack of governance mechanisms. We propose a governed Federated Learning framework using the Eclipse Dataspace Components Connector to enforce compliance and data sovereignty through policy enforcement. By training in-hospital mortality prediction and Alzheimer’s detection models, we show that the proposed framework maintains model performance while ensuring robust governance, making it a practical solution for privacy-sensitive applications.
